Les filles du Karité
"The bushes scattered over the immense burnt plain are more abundant. The yellow ochers of the Sahel steppe blend into a range of humid reddish browns, mixed with the greens of the tree-filled savannah..."
Abstracts
"What Nathalie was keen to first unveil her beautiful Toussian land to me from the top of the cliff overlooking the infinite savannah. As we crossed the stone blocks that clinked together under our feet, small paradisiacal cascades sprang up and watered the oases of light-colored forest. Nathalie described the tall trees with a thousand virtues, the baobabs, the nérés, the jujube trees, the gum trees, the tamarind trees, the kapok trees, the majestic African mahoganies, the generous mango trees, and of course, sacred among all of them… the shea trees.
Since the start of time, shea trees have multiplied as the wind has carried them along this fine strip of South Sahel land, stretching from the borders of present-day Senegal to the other end of Africa, up to the extremities of the old kingdom of Ethiopia. Yet today, the sacred shea tree is threatened with eradication on immense stretches now given over to intensive farming and the appetites of a few powerful leaders in the name of higher economic interests."
