"(…) Returning fishermen would converge at the Maumere fish market, where already, gossip had begun its rounds and the first fits of laughter erupted. Linda squatted down as she chatted with her friend behind their stall: six sea breams, perfectly lined up and glistening on a small piece of synthetic tarpaulin, were displayed in front of them. It is primarily women who sell fish at the market.
From the spiraling mountains of shrimp to the big skipjacks laid out in star fashion, or the thousands of small fish like eel, arranged in wavy schools as one might imagine them in their natural element, every stall was meticulously presented. All the women agreed to having me do their portraits. Each of them put on, for my benefit, their best fishmonger talk. From what I heard, all of them had a tall story to tell. Except for Linda, who said nothing, but merely smiled."
